Cataract surgery is a quick and comfortable procedure performed in an outpatient setting. The procedure is done with the patient awake, but anesthetic drops are used to completely numb the eye and sedative is administered by an Anesthesiologist for relaxation. The procedure takes about 10 minutes. An eye patch is usually not necessary and the eye can be used immediately. Vision may be blurred for a few hours to a few days after the procedure, but most people begin to notice vision improvement almost immediately.
The surgeons at Nevada Eye Consultants specialize in custom cataract surgery and offer three different options for the surgical treatment of cataracts.
Premium Cataract Surgery: Best option for the individual who desires clear distance and near vision without glasses after cataract surgery.
Advanced Refractive Cataract Surgery: Best option for the individual who desires clear distance vision without glasses but is willing to wear glasses for reading or close work.
Standard Cataract Surgery: Best option for the individual who does not mind wearing glasses for distance and for near after cataract surgery.

During cataract surgery the lens in the eye, which has become clouded, is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. The artificial lens last for life and will not wear out or develop a cataract. Once a cataract is treated it will not come back. Artificial lens or IOLs come in different varieties that are designed to do different things. Standard Monofocal IOLs are designed to simply replace the lens that is removed from the eye. Patients may need glasses for distance and near vision if a standard IOL is implanted. Advanced Refractive IOLs are designed to reduce Astigmatism and other sources of blurriness and patients typically are able to see clearly enough to see without glasses for distance or near (but not both). Premium lenses including Accommodating IOLs and Multifocal IOLs are designed to reduce or eliminate glasses for both distance and near vision and most patients do not need glasses for most tasks with these IOLs.
Most medical insurances including Medicare and Medicaid pay for cataract eye surgery. Standard Monofocal lenses are covered by insurance, but Advanced Refractive IOLs and Premium IOLs are more expensive than the lenses typically covered by insurance and a fee in addition to payment by insurance is typically required.
Cataract surgery is the most common operation in the world. According to the National Institutes of Health, in the United States, more than 3 million procedures are performed annually.
